Quebec's New Ecovillage Directory

Répertoire des éco-communautés du Québec.
The Directory is a 112-page spiral bound booklet listing 36 communities, eco-settlements, eco-projects, and rural towns oriented towards sustainability. Each listing shows the community’s founding date, number of members, and number of acres, and describes its social organizational, ecological and economic aspects, and spiritual aspects when applicable. The directory also includes maps of communities in each region, and information about local and regional networks.

I later joined her in the traveling and research effort, and we both worked on the Directory’s layout and design. During the year we traveled across the province and met members of eco-communities, we became aware that it was not only possible to meet human needs while living on the Earth in a sustainable way, but that many people were already doing it, and quite successfully!
“With the release of this Directory, readers will be able to explore for the first time in one place the community living options of Québec — in that province's native tongue,” says Laird Schaub, director of the Fellowship for Intentional Community in the U.S. “What’s more, this Directory has been crafted to the same high standard of inclusivity and even-handedness that the FIC adheres to.”
We launched the Directory on November 21, 2009, at a large communities gathering we hosted at a 25-year-old rural ecovillage, La Cité Écologique in Ham du Nord, Québec. Leslie Carbonneau, as founder of the project, and Diana Leafe Christian, publisher and editor of Ecovillages online newsletter, were keynote speakers. Almost 200 people from 20 already-existing or newly forming communities attended the gathering. It was an inspiring celebration of diversity in community, with participants united towards a common goal: creating a sustainable lifestyle, and doing it together!
“May this directory contribute to the collective effort to grow sustainable living in North America and around the world with tolerance and diversity,” says Leslie. “We are honored to have the opportunity to live this great adventure with the eco-communities of Québec.”
