J'aimerais savoir comment avoir la guide des écovillages du Québec. Merci!

Melin

Québec, Canada

Melin asks how to buy the guide to ecovillages in Quebec, described in the article Quebec’s New Ecovillage Directory in the June 2010 issue of this newsletter. To order a Quebec Communities Directory, email Vicky Vellieux at info~at~ecocommunautes-qc.org. The cost is $20 plus mailing fees (CAN$4.50 in Canada; US$8.00 in the US). And please see the Directory website. —Diana

Dear Diana,

Can you recommend a good book on ecovillages? I would like to be more informed about this, before embarking on some activities on my farm. Thanks.

The best book I know of on ecovillages is Jonathan Dawson’s Ecovillages: New Frontiers for Sustainability. (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2006, and Green Books, UK, 2006). It’s a fast read, well-written, accurate, and grounded. Jonathan is a past president of GEN (Global Ecovillage Network) and past co-director of GEN-Europe, a specialist in ecovillage economics, and a longtime member of Findhorn Foundation in Scotland.

For an engaging, lively, well-written “how we did it” account by an ecovillage founder, I highly recommend Liz Walker’s EcoVillage at Ithaca: Pioneering a Sustainable Culture. (New Society Publishers, 2005).

And please forgive me for recommending my own book too. Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities (New Society Publishers, 2003) is about starting successful new ecovillages, based on what founders of successful as well as failed communities learned that worked well — and didn’t work well.

All are available from Community Bookshelf, the Felllowship for Intentional Community’s mail order book service, and from Amazon.com.

Thanks for asking, and good luck! —Diana

Dear Diana,

Just a quick note to say I really like the format of this online newsletter with the short summary on the email page then links to the article if you are interested in reading further. For busy people with email and info overload this is a perfect way of getting where I want quickly. May I also say how much I have enjoyed reading your two books on intentional community, Creating a Life Together and Finding Community. I am on that journey and, before reading your books the task seemed just a little overwhelming! Your books are so helpful and practical . . . even for readers outside the US where the laws and structures are somewhat different. Amazing and invaluable tools. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! —Diana
